چکیده

INTRODUCTION Achilles tendon rupture is among the most frequent musculoskeletal injury, with over 1 million cases annualy in the United States alone [1]. Calf stretches and warm-up are routinely used by professional and recreational athletes as an injury prevention measure. Both londitudinal stretch training studies and accute calf stretching have shown to decrease tendon stiffness [2,3], representing a possible mechanism for reducing the incidence of tendon rupture. However, these studies use stretching protocols that are impractical and of much greater intensity compared to those commonly used by ‘typical’ middle-aged indiviulas, who are most at risk of tendon injury. Moreover, no studies have addressed the effect of warm-up on Achilles tendon mechanical properties. Concequently, whether or not commonly adopted stretching and warm-up routines used by recreational athletes confer any accute adaptive response to the Achiles tendon remails unclear.

Influence of stretching and warm-up on Achilles tendon material properties.

BACKGROUND Controversy exists on stretching and warm-up in injury prevention. We hypothesized that warm up has a greater effect on Achilles tendon biomechanics than static stretching. This study investigated static stretching and warm-up on Achilles tendon biomechanics in recreational athletes, in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten active, healthy subjects, 5 males, 5 females, With a mean age of...

Chronic Achilles tendinopathy: a case study of treatment incorporating active and passive tissue warm-up, Graston Technique, ART, eccentric exercise, and cryotherapy.

OBJECTIVE To describe the subjective pain and functional improvements of a patient with chronic Achilles tendinopathy following a treatment plan incorporating active and passive tissue warm-up, followed respectively by soft tissue mobilization utilizing both Graston Technique(®) and Active Release Techniques(®), eccentric exercise, and static stretching in combination with cryotherapy. Antioxidant Properties of Pistacia khinjuk Accelerate Healing of the Experimental Achilles Tendon Injury in Rabbits

Background: Delayed tendon healing and tendon adhesions are still found to be among the complications that occur most often after tendon repair. Pistacia khinjuk is one of the three species of Pistacia growing in Iran. Objective: In this study, the role of local injection of ethanolic extract of P. khinjuk was evaluated in healing of the experimental Achilles tendon injury in rabbits. Metho...

Effects of a Dynamic Warm-Up, Static Stretching or Static Stretching with Tendon Vibration on Vertical Jump Performance and EMG Responses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of static stretching, with vibration given directly over Achilles tendon, on electro-myographic (EMG) responses and vertical jump (VJ) performances. Fifteen male, college athletes voluntarily participated in this study (n=15; age: 22±4 years old; body height: 181±10 cm; body mass: 74±11 kg). All stages were completed within 90 ...

The Effect of Achilles Tendon Stretching on Weightbearing

Introduction The gastrocsoleus complex via the Achilles tendon exerts a plantar flexion moment on the foot and ankle. The manifestation of this moment on the forefoot during gait is that of plantar pressure. Stretching is routinely recommended by physicians to provide relief of forefoot pain, heel pain and plantar fasciitis, as well as being advised prior to sporting activities to minimize inju...
